Something in the Air

Post by Smells-the-Rain »

Morning all.

Wanted to jot this down while it’s still fresh. The last three nights here have been completely dry — clear skies, no storms in the forecast, barely even a breeze — but I keep catching the scent of petrichor. Not faint, either. The full, sharp “first-rain” smell you get when the earth’s been waiting for it.

The odd part: it comes and goes in waves, like something drifting past me. Not wind. Not a shift in the air. More like… footsteps you can’t hear, only smell.

I walked the edge of the treeline tonight to see if I could pin it down. Found a couple things worth noting:
– Patches of soil that were damp to the touch, but only in small circles. Surrounding ground was bone dry.
– A set of shallow impressions, not quite footprints, but as if something heavy had rested there for a second.
– A low humming when I got near the old culvert — not mechanical, more like air vibrating.

Here’s the part I almost didn’t want to admit:
The petrichor smell gets stronger when I turn toward the house, like something trying to coax me back out toward the treeline.

I don’t feel threatened. It doesn’t read like danger. It feels… aware of me.

If any of you have worked cases involving weather mimicry, atmospheric spirits, or entities that use environmental cues to get attention, I’d appreciate a second opinion. This doesn’t feel like a storm building — it feels intentional.

I’m planning to check the culvert again tonight unless someone convinces me otherwise.
